Working privately

EK Oct 23, 2018 10:10PM CEST

Is it possible for me to develop my new content in the Simplice theme without overriding my existing site/theme? I installed the Simplice theme, but I have to make it "Active" in order to use the editor. This overrides my existing site, which uses another theme. Is it possible to work privately on the new theme and publish live once all pages/content are complete?

Thank you!

Hey EK!

Thanks for reaching out. We’re pumped to hear you’re building your new site with Semplice.

Yes, you can absolutely keep your current site live while you work on the new one.
You’ll simply need to install Wordpress/Semplice into a subfolder on your hosting server.

So, just create a new folder on your web server where your site files are stored and
install a fresh copy of Wordpress into that subfolder (your main site files will be in the root directory).

Here’s a nice guide on how to install Wordpress: https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/guide-installing-wordpress/

You can start creating your new site from the subfolder (so, for example, if your site URL is
www.mysite.com and you install in a subfolder called “new-site”, then the
URL for your new site would be at www.mysite.com/new-site).

Once your new site is complete, you can then simply switch the site address
over to the subdirectory where your new site is located.

If you have more questions about this, I would reach out to your hosting provider who can assist with this further or even do it for you.

Hope that helps!

Happy building,
Jon
