Self-hosted video overlay or lightbox

Rowen May 03, 2017 08:47PM CEST

The closest thread I found to solving my issue was this one:

But I'm using self-hosted videos so I don't need to use oEmbed.

What I'm looking for is really simple:

I want the videos on that page to play with some sort of overlay so that users can easily click off of the video to close it and return to the thumbnails.

As it currently stands, the thumbnails bring you to a permalink for each individual video. This isn't optimal as the user has to then navigate back to the /work/ page to return to the thumbnails.

I really don't even need navigation when a user is viewing a video—if anything, just an X in the top right corner to, again, return the user to the thumbnails/portfolio grid view.

The idea is to allow a user to quickly browse the videos and move on.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Rowen,

There isn’t a way to make the video pop up in a lightbox. Are you using the portfolio grid?

You can directly add the videos to this page: and then you’d be able to play them directly on the page.

Right, but then I couldn't tile them the way they are now. I'd have to eliminate the columns and stack the videos vertically at full-width so the user could see the videos at a decent size. Since there are 11 videos, that would create a very long page and would not be an optimal user experience.

All I'm looking for is a solution that allows the videos to play in a way that doesn't navigate the user away from the page, besides the option of playing the video in the thumbnail space (because it would be far too small).

Hi Rowen,

Unfortunately something like that would have to be custom coded and we aren’t able to help with that level of customization.

Cool. You guys should think about adding a feature like that to Semplice. It's a very common function and I see tons of threads about it on here.
